- Garcia describes "a large, indoor facility, sort of similar to the Nassau Coliseum — really a *hideous* building for sound, and the first half of the night was a complete throwaway. It was just a total struggle; everybody in the band had an equally horrible time, it sounded bad to everybody. So during the break it was kind of like we had a chance to stop and look at the situation and say, 'Well, is there anything we can do to improve this?' And we realized that we couldn't, that it was hopeless, and so we at least said, 'Well, this is gonna be terrible,' and we went out in the second half and it was *great*, because it gave us a chance to sort of surrender. It was as though some magical transformation had taken place" (Bashe 1980, 38)
