  • This is historically understood and officially credited as Legion of Mary (LOM), with Ron Tutt correspondingly drumming. But great ears have established that this is not Tutt drumming, and therefore this is not Legion of Mary. The advertisements all bill Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders. Betty labeled the tape boxes as "Merl & Jerry". As we say with some regularity, Rex and Betty established and carefully followed the Tutt Rule , whereby Tutt's presence in a gig with Merl was both necessary and sufficient to use of LOM band name.
  • So we label JGMS. But with Betty's notation and our broader understanding of what was happening in this period, we probably should label this as "Merl Saunders & Jerry Garcia" (MSJG). MSJG events would be Merl, Jerry and a drummer other than Kreutzmann, Nelson, Humphrey, or Tutt in 1974-1975. The January 1975 Keystone gigs with Gaylord drumming (and Tony Saunders on bass) would be MSJG gigs. So would many of the gigs with unidentified drummers in May, June and July 1975.
