  • Started two hours late. An attendee recalls: "When these shows were announced on the GD hotline, the venue was given as the Robin Hood Dell' - of which there were two - East and West. The West would become the Mann Music Center. Neither one is or ever was the Tower Theatre. Tickets for the show all read Tower Theatre and as far as I know everyone with a ticket knew to go to the Tower Theatre and several thousand folks were in the theater waiting for the show. We were hanging around upstairs and struck up a conversation with an affable security guard who was manning a door that was opened up to the outside to get some air in the theater - it was very hot that evening. He kept us informed that the show was delayed because for whatever reason Garcia and Kahn hadn't shown up yet. Time marches on, the guard leaves for a few minutes, comes back laughing with a 'you're never going to believe this' look and tells us that Garcia and Kahn finally showed up (in a taxi). The delay? Seems Garcia and Kahn had been driven all over Philadelphia trying to figure out what venue they were playing as whatever prompted the GD hotline to announce Robin Hood Dell as the venue was also printed on Garcia's tour itinerary. Oops. Right out of Spinal Tap." While we at Jerrybase hate to undermine a good story, it turns out that the venue was not incorrectly given on the tour itinerary. Maybe the guys just missed their train from DC to Philly.
