  • review: [negative] Johnson 1986: "Garcia played two sets that barely clocked in at 40 minutes each. … he played a total of twelve songs … That's not much music considering the cheapest seats cost nearly fifteen bucks. But it's difficult to fault Garcia for a quickie gig when everything he did was greeted by abject ecstasy by his listeners. That tends to dilute the creative process. Mumbled, indecipherable lyrics? That's okay, Jerry, it was fine. We know the words to all the songs, anyway. A few listless arrangements and directionless guitar solos? Don't worry, Jerry. It was brilliance, sheer brilliance. No wonder Garcia barely acknowledged his audience and blew out in a hurry." He did like Bird Song, "the highlight of the short concert and an acoustic tour-de-force. It "seemed as though Garcia would have preferred playing in a coffeehouse filled with espresso drinkers who had no idea who he was".
