    Notes
  • This material circulates as 7/21/74, but this is the correct dating. The only memo in the history of the Institute for Jerry Garcia Studies establishes this beyond any reasonable doubt - what one of us calls ε. GD Archives had receipts showing that Betty bought a bunch of tape this day at Morrison's in Bereley this date, but this was before those boxes had been processed, so our ref is just Grateful Dead Archive, ms332, Janet's Files, Second Accrual (preliminary), Box 1017. First known shared stage for Garcia and the great Gaylord Birch.
  • JGMF: Pennies From Heaven: Listening to the Tape Known as JGMS 7/21/74
  • Listing: San Francisco Examiner, January 21, 1975, p. 20
  • Nick: Jan 21-22, 1975 - or, the case of '7/21-22/74'
  • JGMF: JGMS: 'July 21-22', 1974, Keystone, Berkeley, CA | JGMS January 21-22, 1975, Keystone, Berkeley
  • All the billings and tapes say Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders, but this is one where reversing the order could be justified, as this is some flavor of Aunt Monk / Merl Saunders Band.
  • Historical
  • Garcia's first known performance with Gaylord Birch
