Yes, it's true that Jerry played Philly on 9/21 with the GD, this benefit gig in Berkeley on 9/22 with Merl, and was back with the Dead for their gig on the 23rd in Waterbury, CT. Selvin (1972b) notes this explicitly: "To play at [this gig] Garcia flew in from New York and out again the same night to rejoin the Dead on tour."
