Pigpen was not present , probably related to taking time off to care for his girlfriend Veronica who was recovering from a stroke, as discussed on deadsources.

The set lists for 10/12 and 10/13 are basically identical, minus the Jam after Drums. Thorough and careful evaluation of the recordings from both nights reveals that there are multiple obvious and distinct differences in the performances that proves they basically played the same set list two nights in a row since Pigpen wasn't there so the band had limited material without his songs.

from Deadlist.net entry for 10/12/68 "This show has circulated for years mislabeled 10/13/68, but it's really 10/12/68. It wasn't FM broadcast live, but there was a mid-1970's KSAN broadcast of this show (up through the Jam after New Potato) and that is the source of the 10/13/68 tapes. Dick Latvala found the master reel in the vault of the complete set 2, which was not in circulation till recently. Dick has said that this is one of his favorites and he calls it primal Dead" This is an old set list note, and is confusing due to the fact that the band played the same set list two nights in a row.
