Notes
  • Phil's first show
  • The band played without Pigpen. Sue Swanson told David Gans in 1992, "[Pigpen] didn’t want to play, or he was too young and he’d forgotten his ID. Whatever the reason, we ended up out in the car, the two of us, while the band played. And he told me the whole story of The Hobbit! From beginning to end, while they played in Frenchy’s."
  • lostlivedead: June 18, 1965, Frenchy's, Hayward, CA: Lords Of London "According to legend (Dennis McNally and Phil Lesh tell the same story), the fledgling Warlocks were hired for a three-day engagement at Frenchy's, and after a night of weird, stiff rhythm and blues they came back the next evening to discover they had been replaced by an accordion-and-clarinet duo (McNally, p.84)"
